2011 - 2012 Scheduled Trips Unique Safaris specializes in private custom designed safaris and we do not operate scheduled group departures. However, we do work with professional photographers as well as biologists and naturalists who outfit with Unique Safaris. A listing of these specially-led safaris are below. Note: Dates represent arrival and departure dates at Kilimanjaro International Airport. December 2-14, 2011 Safari led by John Weiss. John is an internationally acclaimed photographer with his photographs on display around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in NY, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the famous museums of Paris. He was the director of art and photography at the University of Delaware and originally apprenticed with the legendary Minor White. John leads photo workshops around the world and is firmly committed to taking you to the next level. This safari will focus on the movement of the Serengeti herds into the Southern Plains and will have only 4 photographers per vehicle. January 30-February 9, 2012 Photo Safari led by Greg Downing. Greg has been traveling the world teaching professional and amateur photography for more than a decade hosting his instructional workshops and seminars. Instructing photographers of all levels of experience, Greg has earned a reputation for his gracious and generous teaching style. His images are known for their unique style, exacting composition and strict attention to detail. As an internationally recognized photographer, Greg’s numerous publishing credits include books, advertising campaigns and editorial publications such as Birding Magazine, Outdoor Photographer Magazine, Birder’s World and National Geographic and many others. In 2003, Greg founded www.NatureScapes.net with E.J. Peiker and Heather Forcier. Today, Greg is the publisher, president and sole owner of the company. February 9-19, 2012 Photo Safari led by Charles Hamm. Charles has been teaching photography and art for over 20 years in Maine. He has led trips to Italy, France, Canada, Boston and Manhattan as well as Tanzania. His understanding of Swahili and knowledge of African wildlife has made his trips to Tanzania extremely rewarding. His safari is designed for all levels of photography and includes three distinct areas of the Serengeti (north, central and southern) for an extensive exposure to the Serengeti. This safari also features 4 nights of private deluxe mobile camping in the southern Serengeti. February 11-25, 2012 Safari led by Joe and Mary Ann McDonald. Joe and Mary Ann are acclaimed nature photographers, leading photo trips all over the world, but with a specialty in East African safaris and photography. Joe and Mary Ann’s safaris sell out quickly and they are conduct their days with an intensive commitment to understanding and anticipating animal behavior for the best opportunities for photography. There will only be 3 photographers per vehicle. February 17-March 2, 2012 - FULL Safari led by Gil and Lilian Boese, founders of the Foundation for Wildlife Conservation. FULL Gil was the Director of the Milwaukee Zoo, Deputy Director of the Brookfield Zoo and the founder of Birds without Borders in Belize. Gil and Lilian are passionate about education and conservation and their depth of experience proves to make every safari a special experience not only in observing wildlife, but also in providing a comprehensive approach to understanding the complexity of Eco-systems. March 31-April 11, 2012 Safari led by Steve Morello. Steve is the co-founder of Mondoverde Expeditions and the author of The Traveling Nature Photographer and he has been guiding trips for over 20 years around the world. Steve is one of the most experienced and enjoyable tour leaders you might ever experience. His good nature, patience and commitment to education make each of his safaris totally enjoyable. Steve has selected this time of the year to focus on the movement of the Serengeti herds between the southern and central plains with opportunities to photograph animals and wildflowers. There will be a maximum of 3-4 per vehicle. May 18-31, 2012 (travel dates to and from US) Kenya Safari with Dick Mills Special opportunity to travel with Dick Mills, President and founder of World Discovery Safaris, to visit Kenya. Dick grew up in Kenya and it is a unique opportunity to visit Kenya with his background and knowledge not only as a biologist, but also as a former Kenyan resident May 20-June 2, 2012 Safari offered by the Houston Audubon Society. Led by photographer Kathy Adams Clark and Naturalist Gary Clark. led by photographer Kathy Adams Clark and Naturalist Gary Clark. “This safari will focus on the prolific birdlife of Arusha, Manyara and Tarangire National Parks as well as the wildlife of Ngorongoro Crater, and two areas of the Serengeti (central and northern) with opportunity to interact with the Maasai of northern Loliondo. Kathy is a professional photography with her own stock agency representing 15 photographers. Her work has been published in National Geographic Books, the New York Times and Sierra. Kathy teaches over 50 photography workshops and classes each year.” November 4-15, 2012 Safari led by Mike Hagen, Nikonian photo club. Mike is an outstanding photographer who receives rave reviews from all his travelers, in terms of his commitment and expertise to teach about wildlife photography and optimize your opportunities for excellent photos from your safari. Mike and his wife own Out There Images. This safari will focus on the movement of the large herds from northern Serengeti into the central Serengeti and onward to the southern plains. SOON TO BE POSTED – Journey’s Unforgettable will host a photo workshop during the wildebeest calving in 2012, featuring Brennan Rimer and Dana Allen, both Nikon professional photographers. Brennan and Dana will also lead an additional safari during the dry season in 2012, focusing on the wildebeest river crossings. Kilimanjaro Climbs Unique Safaris will coordinate a climb of Mount Kilimanjaro only if there is a safari before or after the climb. We work with a highly skilled company on the mountain, with guides well trained in emergency mountain medicine. Mount Kilimanjaro is not a technical climb, but it is a difficult and sometimes dangerous trek due to the rapid gain in altitude in a very short number of days. Unique Safaris will only arrange climbs that are 7 days and 6 nights or longer, for greater success and safety.
