The Ngorongoro Crater is special and unique. It was formed centuries ago as a volcanic caldura, and over time a lush green crater basin has formed that has resident animals year around. The crater walls surround the valley, which are where the adjacent game lodges are located. There is one rugged road down into the crater basin which is the only way we access the area. Because the basin has water and has plenty of feed, the animals are year around residents.

The crater has the largest density of black rhinos of anywhere in Tanzania. Though endangered, these magnificent animals have been protected well here. Sightings are frequent on your game drives.

Elephant in Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania

Elephants fear no one.

Be sure to follow the advise of our driver/naturalists as they know the habits and traits of all our wild game. The rule of thumb is that you are safe inside the vehicles (and in your tents in camp), but wild animals are just that, "wild", and they do not like to be teased or threatened.

Up close and personal with a male lion. Sometimes, in the heat of the day, the shade of your vehicle looks inviting to a hot lion. Often they will come and lay next to the Land Rover, making for some very interesting photographs.

Biologists consider Ngorongoro to have one of the highest densities of animal life on earth. Ngorongoro Crater is a World Heritage Site.

Game Lodge on the Ngorongoro Crater rim

Often the park you visit first is the Tarangire, followed by the Ngorongoro. At the Ngorongoro all visitors stay in game lodges located along the top of the crater rim. No tent camps are allowed in the area or down on the basin floor.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a "must see" in the priorities of what you build into your safari. It is usually your second major area to visit on a "northern circuit" safari.
