Looking into the crater at dawn. Even if there were no wildlife, this would be, scenically, one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. But there is wildlife - an enormous amount. Biologists consider Ngorongoro to have one of the highest densities of animal life on earth. Ngorongoro Crater is a World Heritage Site.

The Ngorongoro Crater is special and unique. It was formed centuries ago as a volcanic caldura, and over time a lush green crater basin has formed that has resident animals year around. The crater walls surround the valley, which are where the adjacent game lodges are located. There is one rugged road down into the crater basin which is the only way we access the area. Because the basin has water and has plenty of feed, the animals are year around residents.

The crater has the largest density of black rhinos of anywhere in Tanzania. Though endangered, these magnificent animals have been protected well here. Sightings are frequent on your game drives.

Up close and personal with a male lion. Sometimes, in the heat of the day, the shade of your vehicle looks inviting to a hot lion. Often they will come and lay next to the Land Rover, making for some very interesting photographs.

The Ngorongoro Crater fits well into a 2 night stop in your safari trip. This gives you one full day to explore the crater floor and all the animal life. Then you move on to the Oldavi Gorge and the Sarengeti for the next chapter in your adventure trip.
